Johnson City Public Library has an opening for a Children’s Librarian. A staff member in this position builds programs to engage children and caretakers in ways that reflect the library’s mission and values, and they choose resources to enhance the library collection. They design and provide engaging activities that help young people develop their creativity, interests, and talents. They conduct activities to introduce children to different types of literature while ensuring compliance with library policies and procedures. This employee may serve on committees. They provide guidance and support for library assistants and clerks, and they oversee the Children’s Library when acting as the senior staff on duty. Work is performed under general direction from the Children’s Library Manager. All work is evaluated through conferences and observations for soundness of judgment, innovation, and initiative in performing duties and responsibilities.
The Library is seeking an approachable and self-motivated person, someone who is outgoing with excellent interpersonal skills, leadership skills, and a working knowledge of library methods and trends. A person in this position is expected to provide and model quality customer service to children and caretakers. They must have the ability to work effectively and courteously with the public, work independently, and with a team under the direction of the Children’s Library Manager. They must possess strong communication skills and think creatively.
Duties and Responsibilities:
- Provides and models exceptional customer service to patrons in the Children’s Library
- Initiates, plans, coordinates, and executes outcome-based children’s programs that fulfill the library’s mission, values, and strategic plan while serving a diverse patron base
- Works with other departments and community partners to develop programming for all ages
- Assists with and executes collection management activities
- Increases skills and knowledge through professional development opportunities
- Performs other duties as assigned, independently and as part of a team
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
Thorough knowledge of the principles and practices of library science and the ability to instruct others in the applications of these principles and practices. Knowledge of and desire to explore trends and innovations in the field. Ability to plan and direct the work of staff engaged in providing children’s reference services, collection management, and children’s programming. Ability to supervise the Children’s Library in the absence of the Children’s Library Manager. Ability to plan, organize, promote, and implement programs. Has excellent communication skills and presents ideas effectively orally and in writing. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with all library personnel and the public.
Desirable Experience and Education: A master’s degree in library science or comparable combination of education and experience is required.
Other Requisites: From time to time the incumbent may be assigned special duties by a director or manager, or may be asked to assist other employees occupying a different position. ADA REQUIREMENTS:
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS: Tasks involve some physical effort, i.e. some standing and walking, or frequent light lifting (5-25 pounds) or other restricted physical activities. Manual dexterity in the use of fingers, limbs or body in the operation of shop and office equipment; may involve extended periods of sitting at a keyboard. This position may require driving the library vehicle.
ENVIRONMENTAL REQUIREMENTS: Tasks are regularly performed without exposure to adverse environmental conditions (e.g., dirt, cold, rain, fumes).
SENSORY REQUIREMENTS: Task requires sound perception and discrimination. Task requires visual perception and discrimination. Task requires oral communications ability.
Hours: Full-Time, evening and weekend work is required
Classification and compensation: This is a 40hr per week exempt position; $38,394 annual salary. Competitive benefits package that includes paid vacation, sick, and holiday leave; medical, dental, vision, life insurance as well as retirement benefits.
